KICK Sauber F1 Team: An Overview Founded by Peter Sauber in the 1970s, the Sauber Formula One team made its mark in F1 in 1993 after a successful stint in sports car racing. Based in Hinwil, Switzerland, Sauber quickly became known for its engineering excellence and commitment to developing young talent. The team achieved its first podium in 1995 with Heinz-Harald Frentzen and consistently exceeded expectations throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In 2005, BMW acquired a controlling interest in the team, rebranding it as BMW Sauber. This collaboration reached its height in 2008 when Robert Kubica claimed the team’s first and only Grand Prix victory in Canada, propelling BMW Sauber to a third-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship. Following BMW’s exit from F1 at the end of 2009, Peter Sauber regained control. Despite facing financial challenges, the team stayed competitive and was instrumental in the careers of several F1 stars, including Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Räikkönen, and Sergio Pérez.
In 2016, Longbow Finance took over the team, providing financial stability. A key development occurred in 2018 with a new partnership and rebranding as Alfa Romeo Racing. Although the Sauber name was removed from the official title, the team continued to operate out of Hinwil, preserving its identity and engineering heritage. As of 2023, the Alfa Romeo sponsorship ended, leading the team into a transition phase aimed at becoming the Audi factory team by 2026. In 2024, it was officially rebranded to KICK Sauber F1 Team, reflecting a new sponsorship and a modern image. While track results have been modest, the team is actively preparing for a competitive future with full Audi support on the horizon.
The KICK Sauber F1 Team remains a symbol of resilience, innovation, and the spirit of independent racing, with a strong emphasis on future success.
