How to apply decals to a model kit

Decals are essential in adding realistic details such as insignias and numbers to scale model plastic kits, transforming your model into a lifelike piece. Correct application of decals improves both the realistic details and the model’s final appearance. This comprehensive guide demonstrates the best methods for effective decal application.

1. Prepare the Surface
Make sure your surface remains smooth and free of debris before applying decals. Decals adhere best to glossy finishes. Before decal application, use an airbrush or spray can to apply a clear gloss coat to matte or rough model surfaces with products such as hobby-specific gloss varnish. Let it cure completely before proceeding. Use a soft cloth to wipe the surface clean of dust and fingerprints.

2. Cut Out the Decals
Use a sharp hobby knife or fine scissors to excise each decal as close to the edge as you can so that the carrier film remains minimal. Apply decals individually to avoid any mishandling and confusion.

3. Soak the Decal
Submerge the trimmed decal in lukewarm water in a shallow dish for 10–30 seconds until it detaches from its backing paper. Avoid soaking the decal in water for extended periods because it can separate too soon and become hard to manage.

4. Slide the Decal Onto the Model
Slide the decal from its backing paper to the model’s surface using tweezers and a soft brush or cotton swab with gentle motions. Use a wet brush or toothpick to place the decal precisely on the model. Water provides lubrication for the decal, so small movements during placement should not cause concern.

5. Set the Decal
After positioning the decal, blot the residual water away using a lint-free paper towel or soft cloth. Gently press down to remove air bubbles. Using Micro Set decal setting solution helps decals bond better and fit properly over curved and detailed surfaces. Apply Micro Sol or an even stronger softener to areas that remain problematic.

6. Dry and Cure
Allow the decals to dry completely—preferably overnight. The decals remain secure when properly attached, which stops them from moving during handling.

7. Seal the Decals
After drying the decals use a clear gloss or matte topcoat to protect them and integrate the decal edges into the surface. The final coat produces a uniform appearance on the model and guards decals against peeling or developing a cloudy appearance called silvering which occurs from trapped air beneath the decal film.

With careful attention and dedication decal application will turn your model into an authentic miniature version.
