The PBY Catalina is the world’s most famous and most used flying boat in the history of aviation. Its main characteristic’s are the tear-drop shaped gun positions on the fuselage sides.
It also has self-sealing fuel tanks. The PBY became the US Navy’s standard patrol aircraft from 1941 onwards. In addition to long distance reconnaissance and convoy protection the Catalina’s main role was to detect and attack enemy ships and submarines.
