The U.S.S. Constitution was the first commissioned ship of the United States Navy. The ship was nicknamed “Old Ironside” during the War of 1812, when cannon fire from the British warship H.M.S. Guerriere bounced off the Constitution’s side walls as if they were made of iron, not hardwood. The Constitution’s guns then destroyed the Guerriere. Throughout her sea voyages, she was never boarded by enemies. Even today, the Constitution can be seen in Boston Harbor. She lies at anchor there as a symbol of the young nation.
